Black Bajans in World War One

This section of the Historycal Roots site features Bill Hern’s research into black soldiers in World War One from Barbados. Bill has made several research trips to the island and has spent a considerable amount of time searching cemeteries for the memorials of those who served and died during the so called ‘Great War’.

He went with a mission to visit all the World War 1 Commonwealth War Graves on the island. I’m pleased to say that he succeeded and in a series of articles on Historycal Roots he has produced a short summary of each of his visits to the churches and graveyards on the island as well as details of those soldiers that are buried there.

It isn’t all hard work though as Bill’s articles illustrate some of the trials and tribulations of doing research on the island: from crazy bus drivers to the cost of beer, it’s all here!

There are twelve articles in all, they are on the following pages, in alphabetical order by soldier’s surname.
